I like the first impression of savory, clove-stuck baked-apple on the nose, broadening out into ripe red berries and milder, nutty, oak-induced spice. Medium-to-full bodied with the same mix of spice and fruit that envelops the tannins and provides a lengthy, flavorful finish. Rather an unique Barolo and fun to taste now, but definitely poised for some aging. Best from 2024.
Ellena Giuseppe positions its 2018 Barolo del Comune di La Morra at a very tempting price point. The blend sees fruit from four separate vineyard sites in La Morra (of which two are inside the Ascheri MGA). The long, polished elegance of that site is in fact the motor that drives this wine. With 12,000 bottles made, it reveals dark fruit, rose petal and soft earthy sensations. Winemaking sees 60 days of maceration in stainless steel and 24 months of oak aging (using a combination of large botte and smaller barrique).
