The 2017 vintage is considered our best in recent years. Perfectly warm, dry weather through most of the growing season was followed by a sharp drop-off in temperatures in the months leading up to harvest. Although early frost reduced our yield, it ensured a crop of ripe, deeply concentrated fruit that we crafted into a powerful wine with amazing aromatic complexity and refreshing acidity.

It's good to taste some older wines, and I enjoyed the floral, developed and polished 2017 Viña Andrico Malbec, which seems to have hit its soft spot four years after bottling. It's floral with showy aromas of violets, paprika and crushed stones. It was produced in an elegant style but with ripeness, 14.4% alcohol and generous spice. It fermented in 75% in stainless steel and 25% new barriques with 10% full clusters and then matured in barrique for 20 months. The result is spectacular, and the young 2016 already showed how the oak had been quite respectful with the fruit. Delicious and mature now. 

A rich, flavorful red with lots of dried fruit and orange peel. Toasted oak, too. Full-bodied with chewy tannins that need some time to soften. A little old-school, but attractive. Try after 2024.
