From vines planted in 1926, the 2022 Zinfandel Brandlin Ranch shows a fascinating, coniferous side of the grape grown on decomposed granite soils on Mount Veeder. The nose opens slowly to reveal refined, energetic aromas of bay leaves, dried red cherries and cranberries with nuances of wild mint, tea tree oil and oceanic lift, becoming evermore expressive with time in the glass. The palate is powerful and full of intense, generous red and black fruits with supple, approachable tannins and juicy, rounded acidity. The finish supplies a precise framing and drying structure, circling back to the nose's botanical and earth-laced fruit notes, finishing on a long, rich, iron-tinged note. This should evolve beautifully in the cellar over the next 15 years.
