Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone 2020 Rated 90 Points by the Wine Spectator Located in the heart of the Gigondas appellation within the Rhone Valley, Saint Cosme is the oldest estate in the area. With documentation dating the winery back to 1416, family ownership of the winery dating to 1490 (that is 14 generations of vignerons!) and perfectly preserved Gallo-Roman fermentation vats, the estate is truly in touch with its history, while embracing the modern winemaking techniques that are now available. There are 21 different grape varietals that can legally be used to make Cotes du Rhone. Most Red Cotes du Rhones are based on Grenache, with other grapes such as Syrah blended in. Saint Cosme has a different take on Cotes du Rhone, with their wine based on Syrah instead of Grenache. The goal at Saint Cosme was to create a Cotes du Rhone that was fruit-forward, rounded and fresh. Of course, everything is dependant on the weather, so the percentage of Syrah being used as the base of the blend will change vintage by vintage in order to stay true to making the best possible wine each year. The winemakers at Saint Cosme were impressed with the 2020 vintage, with its stunning and ripe fruit that is apparent right off the bat in the wine's youth. You will find lush black fruit, round and fleshy, just begging to be paired with a juicy steak. Rated 90 Points by the Wine Spectator - "A solidly built version, with crushed cherry and plum puree notes that meld with melted red licorice before singed juniper takes over on the finish. This has guts and range. Drink now through 2023." Enjoy now, and don't be afraid to pair this with your Thanksgiving feast! Cheers! Tracy Maxon |
