Dating back to the 1820's, Domaine de la Solitude started as a Monastic order known as The Hermitage. Today it is actually both a Monastic order and a vineyard. The vineyard and winemaking side has been managed by Olivier Bernard of Domaine de la Chevalier, also located with Pessac-Leognan, as part of a long term contract since 1993. Most of the estate's 32 hectares are dedicated to red grape production with a small amount planted with white grape varietals and is certified as 100% Biodynamic for both red and white grapes for the upcoming vintages. This is an incredibly difficult certification to earn! 

2018 is a classic vintage in Bordeaux and is one of the best vintages made of this wine. It is drinkable now, as the 2018 vintage is quite approachable, but will really begin to hit its stride in the next couple of years, and can continue aging in your cellars for over a decade. The wine is made by the same winemaking team that creates the Domaine de Chevalier, a much more expensive bottling, so this wine at $29.99 in such an excellent vintage as 2018 is quite the value overall. 

Rated 92 Points by the Wine Spectator - "Tight, sleek style, with red currant, loganberry and bitter cherry notes streaming through flecked with savory and red tea hints along the way. Nice flash of iron on the well-focused finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2022 through 2034."

Rated 90-92 Points by the Wine Advocate - "The Domaine de la Solitude 2018 Rouge is deep garnet-purple colored and opens with aromas of cedar, earth, blackberries, cassis and tilled soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is generous and muscular with firm, grainy tannins and a long, earthy finish."
