Etude was established 1982, when founding winemaker Tony Soter set his sights on the cool-climate Carneros region in the pursuit of producing world class Pinot Noir. Always fascinated with the fickle Pinot Noir grape, Tony dabbled in other varietals almost from the winery's founding, making award winning Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and rose's. The Chardonnay is now sourced from the estate's Grace Benoist Ranch in Sonoma's Los Carneros region. 

The Grace Benoist Ranch, home to the Etude Estate Vineyards, lies in the Coast Ranges of California – young mountains thrust up by forces of colliding crustal plates. These forces are also the origin of the San Andreas Fault System and its parallel components, including the Rogers Creek Fault that runs a few hundred feet west of the Ranch. The property itself is cut by at least one fault – the Bennett Valley Fault – which our “Temblor” Vineyard pays tribute to.

A true reflection of the winery’s Grace Benoist Ranch estate vineyard, the Chardonnay is a blend of the best blocks on the Ranch, tucked away in the far northwest corner of the Carneros appellation. Unlike most Carneros vineyards, which are largely uplifted bay bottoms with soils composed of clay, the soils on Grace Benoist Ranch are variations of volcanic origin. Combining these well-drained, rocky upland soils with the extreme western location closer to San Pablo Bay, make this cooler site an ideal place to grow Burgundian varieties.

Medium-bodied, the palate has a lovely silkiness to the texture and loads of buttered toast nuances contributing to the tropical fruit, finishing with a zippy line of freshness."
